Getting it Started with your First Nursing Job

Right after getting that license, you would start thinking about where to work and what positions are waiting for you. When you are already a licensed nursing practitioner, what then are your next goals? You might be wondering what could be the initial steps before you even dive on that job. Here are some guidelines to help you determine the positions you would want to pursue as you hunt for the first job:

1. Decide early on the place (particularly its proximity) where you want to work.
Being a nurse also entails your determination as to the proximity of the place of work. As nursing jobs are in demand in many places in the country, it is but wise that you decide whether you are open or not at the idea of working in a hospital that is far from your home. There are also considerations like the length of travel and cost of transportation that you will have when you already start working.

2. Determine whether you are ready to sacrifice your preferred schedule.
Your preferred work schedule is important as this determines your period of productivity. If your think that working on shifts will be fine, then you may consider working as a ground nurse in hospitals. On the other hand, if you prefer the normal schedule of 9 in the morning til 5 in the afternoon, then shifting is not that ideal; instead you may work in the hospital administration office.

3. Identify the clinical nursing service you are passionate about.
Are you interested in in-patient care services? If so, what particular patients: children or adults? What cases are you willing to handle: terminal? Questions like these will help you specify the workline you prefer.

4. Be ready to ask your job interviewer about the benefits and remuneration they give to their nurses.

Resume Writing: The Hot Tips

A resume is a self-advertising document that presents you (being the product) in the best possible perspective. It should not talk about past jobs, it should focus on YOU- how you performed and what you accomplished in those past jobs. Hence, it is better if you remove everything that starts with “responsibilities included” and instead, start with “on-the-job accomplishments.”

Below are some tips on how to write effective resumes:

1. Decide on a “job objective”. The job objective can be as brief as 5 to 6 words only. This gives the employer the idea about your goals in applying in the company.
2. Determine the type of resume that suits you: Chronological or Functional or Skills-oriented? Use the first if you’re staying in the same field; the second one if you’re changing fields; and the last type if you’re want to impress the employer about your transferable skills.
3. Make your resume filled with Problem-Action-Results (PAR) statements.
4. Resumes should never include your hobbies unless they are relevant to your job objective.
5. Ethnic or religious affiliations are not ideal to be included in your resumes as these may invite pre- interview discrimination.
6. Stationeries and special papers, especially those that are scented are not for resumes. Instead, use plain white or ivory, in a quality appropriate for your job objective.
